Charmaine Spencer

Charmaine Spencer is a Cleveland-based sculptor known for large-scale installations that transform gallery spaces and challenge our ideas about the value of materials. For over twenty years, Spencer has worked with raw, elemental components—including soil, clay, and driftwood—to create powerful statements on environmental justice, shared accountability, and our collective history.

By elevating these natural materials, her work explores how our environment shapes our individual development and our sense of place. Spencer’s sculptures are held in prestigious permanent collections, including the DuSable Black History Museum, the Putnam Collection at Case Western Reserve University, and the Hilton Collection in Downtown Cleveland.

A recipient of the FRONT Art Futures Fellowship and the William McVey Award, Spencer maintains an active international presence through commissions and global touring exhibitions with institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago.
